How to Start Playing Trumpet: Avoid These Big Mistakes

So, you want to start playing the trumpet? You've come to the right place! The trumpet is a fantastic and versatile instrument, capable of producing everything from soft, soulful melodies to high, bright passages. It can enhance a beautiful ballad or accompany a rock band with equal ease.

The Challenges of Starting Trumpet

Starting the trumpet can be challenging, but it's important to understand that this is normal. Every beginner faces this. Typically, if you compare a saxophone student to a trumpet student after a month, the saxophonist might be playing scales while the trumpet player is still figuring out how to make a sound. Don’t get discouraged if this happens to you. Many incredible players started this way. Be patient, and you’ll find that the rewards are well worth the effort.

Key Recommendations and Mistakes to Avoid

1. Start with the Fundamentals

**Breathing**: It's crucial to spend a good amount of time understanding how to breathe correctly. The key is to stay relaxed, avoiding unnecessary tension, especially around your shoulders and throat. A common mistake among beginners is raising their shoulders as they breathe. To avoid this, think about filling your belly first and then expanding your chest slightly. Imagine a big "OHHHH" when you breathe, almost like yawning. The better you get at this, the better your sound will be.

**Holding the Instrument**: Properly holding the trumpet is essential. Use your left hand to support most of the instrument's weight, allowing your right hand to remain flexible for playing. Here's a picture illustrating the correct hand positioning.

**Fingerings**: The trumpet might seem complicated with its three valves, but it’s part of the fun! There are seven basic fingerings, and from these, you can create every note. Check out this "Trumpet Fingering Chart" under resources to help you understand how it works.

2. Avoid Lip Buzzing at First

Many beginners try lip buzzing too early. While lip buzzing has amazing benefits, it can be harmful if not done correctly. Instead, start with mouthpiece buzzing. Focus on getting the richest and fullest sound possible. Begin with long tones up to middle C. Once you’re comfortable with this, you can start playing songs and scales.

3. Embrace Long Tones

Long tones are fundamental to developing a great sound. Start your practice sessions with long tones across your range. Imagine your dream sound and strive to achieve it. With enough practice, you will get there.

4. Practice Scales

Once you're comfortable with long tones, move on to scales. Check the pdf with all the major scales under resources. Practicing scales will improve your technical skills and musical understanding.
